See: The Great Gatsby

This weekend, I went to go see highly anticipated film, The Great Gatsby. I thought the movie was great, and here are my top 5 reasons why.

5. Baz Luhrmann’s Direction: Baz Luhrmann, the man behind the camera for films such as Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, and Australia, truly made The Great Gatsby into a spectacle. My favorite trademark is his use of vivid color. The character’s eye colors seem to pop more, the lights seem to glow brighter and the party scenes feature a rainbow of dazzling characters.

4. The Music: One of my favorite aspects of the movie is the juxtaposition of the 1920s era and modern music. The film’s soundtrack features artists such as Jay-Z, Florence Welsh, Lana Del Rey and Beyonce–not the usual suspects you would think of when it comes to the 1920s, but somehow, it really works with this film. I have to have this soundtrack!

3. The Costumes: You can’t have a period piece without amazing costumes, and this film delivers! The costume designer is Catherine Martin, who just happens to be Baz Luhrmann’s wife. Martin absolutely captures the Roaring 20s era and gives credit to her collaboration with Miuccia Prada. To see more about this collaboration and a behind-the-scenes look of the costumes, take a look at the video below.

2.New York City: This movie reminds me of the reasons why I love New York City, but it sheds a whole new light on the city. Although a majority of the film takes place in Long Island, it gives the viewers plenty of NYC shots. We get to see the busy streets of Wall Street, the glimmering lights in Time Square and the luxurious views of the park from The Plaza Hotel. My favorite part, though, was seeing the panoramic shots of the city where you can see many of the landmark buildings, including the Empire State Building, in the progress of being built. It’s very cool, and it makes me want to go back in time and see what it was really like to live in NYC during that time.

1. Leo: I just have to say that Leonardo DiCaprio was amazing in this movie. Like every movie he is in, he seems to really capture the essence  of Jay Gatsby. I went into the movie trying to compare him to the original film with Robert Redford, but there is no comparison. DiCaprio can stand on his own when it comes to playing one of the most famous literary characters of all time.
